Developmen of Leptosphaeria sacchari (Van Breda de Haan) in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) leaves
Main Article Content
Abstract
The aim of this research was to evaluate the development of Leptosphaeria sacchari in sugarcane leaves, because under favorable environmental conditions, increased disease severity may affect performance. Six cultivars were planted: ´CP52-43´, ´C86-12´, ´C86-56´, ´C90-469´, ´C323-68´ and ´C1051-73´, in individual plots of 48 m2 in the experimental block of the Sugarcane Research Institute Station, located in Mayabeque province. In each plot, ten plants were randomly evaluated in the phenological phases of tillering- sprouting, period of growth and maturation of the crop in the plant and shoot strain of sugarcane. Leaf +1 was marked and evaluations were carried out every seven days, considering the position of the leaf and the appearance of symptoms. The degrees of infection were determined by a scale that relates the size of the lesions and the damaged area on the leaves; this made it possible to determine the severity of the disease in each period. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used in statistical processing (p≤0.05). The severity showed an increase in all cultivars between the third and seventh evaluation until the leaves dried at 13 weeks. The disease infection in the plants begins when the leaf occupies position +2, with a marked increase between positions +5 and +6. In the strains studied, the severity exceeded 40 % with a similar behavior between the cultivars, the lowest value was shown by 'C86-56' and the highest by 'C90-469', which could be related to the susceptibility of these to L. sacchari.
