Water stress impact on seed germination of two common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars
Main Article Content
Abstract
Adaptation strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change include the use of locally adapted cultivars. Therefore the objective of this paper was to evaluate the effect of in vitro induced drought on the germination of Phaseolus vulgaris L., cvs. CULL-156 (black seed) and CC-25-9R (red seed). Twenty five seeds were placed on filter paper in Petri dishes containing 20 mL of six solutions of polyethyleneglycol-6000 as follows: 6% (Ψo= -0.0657 MPa), 9% (Ψo= -0.1247 MPa), 12% (Ψo= -0.2012 MPa), 15% (Ψo= -0.2952 MPa), 18% (Ψo= -0.4066 MPa), 21% (Ψo= -0.5355 MPa) and distilled water (Ψo= 0) as control. The results showed that both cultivars were able to germinate at the osmotic potentials of -0.4066 MPa and -0.5355 MPa, but significant differences were found at -0.5355 MPa when compared to the control for both cultivars (p<0,05). CULL-156 showed highest germination percentages, with values of 84 % and 40 %, respectively; while CC-25-9R reached 56.9 % and 6.9 %. However, the adverse effect of drought on the root and hypocotyl length was strongly evident at osmotic potentials less negative.
