Agrobiodiversity and Seed Fair development to support to in situ conservation of the biodiversity in farm of western and eastern part of Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
This work contains the main activities developed under the financial support of the regional Project “Adaptive management of seed system and gene flow sustainable agriculture and improved livelihoods in humid tropics of Mexico, Cuba and Peru”. It was described the contribution of the Seed and Agrobiodiversity Fair to in situ conservation in the western and eastern part of Cuba. The Fair has been developed during the years 2005 and 2006 with farmer representative of the farm communities related with The Biosphere Reserve “Sierra del Rosario” in Pinar del Río and Reserve “Cuchillas del Toa” in Guantánamo. The Seeds Fair offered the possibility on strengthening of the informal seed system in these regions and facility the exchange of seed between the farmers included in the project, increasing the capacitation of the farmers and their families with develop of workshop with interesting theme to the farmers. The fair has been develop with wide participation of the local govern of the municipalities and others actors involved and the population of the Candelaria and Yateras municipalities. The project has showed the high diversity of cultivars and species conserved in the regions by the presence not only of the target crop to the study like common bean, lime bean, corn and sweet and hot pepper, as well as spreading to others species like roots and tubers, fruits, medicinal plants conserved in both to the home gardens and farms levels.
