Abstract

The effect of different NaCl levels (50, 100, 150 y 200 mM) on germination and growth inhibition of Gibara and Pajimaca cultivars was studied with the purpose of detecting possible markers for early selection of salinity tolerant maize genotypes. Germination percentage, germination dynamics, root and shoot length, root growth and fresh and dry weights were measured. Germination percentage was significantly inhibited to high concentration (200 mM) in Gibara, however germination dynamics didn’t show varietal difference. Fresh and dry biomass production were influenced by saline concentrations, Pajimaca showed the highest inhibition percentage. Fresh and dry biomass and root growth showed a different behavior between both cultivars, so that they can be used as possible markers for early selection of salinity tolerant genotypes.
