Evaluation of the development of common flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) under tropical conditions and its potential for agriculture
Main Article Content
Abstract
Common flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) belong to the Linacea family, was one of the first crop domesticate by man. Flax is originated in the Mediterranean region of Europa around 8000- 10000 years ago, Linen cloth made from flax was used to wrap the mummies in the early Egyptian tombs. This family have 15 genus and around 300 species, in Cuba the specie Linum cubense Bisse is endemic from western region. In 1969 Alain reported the specie Linum usitatissimum L as occasionally harvested for experimentation, but without successful and Roing in 1953 reported the specie Linum grandiflorum Desf as ornamental plant in central Cuba. Two sowing of the unknown variety from Venezuela was doing. Were studies the behaviour of the cycle life and morphological character in the tropical climate of Cuba. The high of plant (80-100 cm), number of branch (1-4), capsule by plant (59.3), whit an average of 9.2 seed by capsule and a yield 70.4 g/m2 the oil seed contained was 45,2 % similar to report by the scientific papers. The flax will become an important alternative crop for it importance as a food and medical use.
