Influence of the caliber of planting material on the quality of floral spikes of gladiolus
Main Article Content
Abstract
The present research was carried out in the field areas of the Liliana Dimitrova Horticultural Research Institute (IIHLD), during the years 2014/2015, in order to demonstrate the influence of the corm quality on the quality of floral spikes. Three corm calibers were used: C1: 4.8-5.8 cm; C2: 4.0 cm - 4.6 cm and C3: 2.8 cm - 3.8 cm and the phenological, morphological and quality variables of the floral spikes were evaluated. A random block design was used, with three replicates and the corms were planted to a plantation frame of 0.90 m X 0.05 m in plots of 4 m2. When analyzing the results obtained it is possible to be appreciated that the beginning of the spike emission, the beginning of the flowering and the harvest of the floral stem, occur in a shorter period of time, in the variant one where the caliber of corm is higher. Similar results are achieved for plant height, leaf length, leaf width and floral stem length. In terms of spike length, flower diameter and number of bells, the highest values are obtained for calibers one and two respectively. The results obtained show that the use of a good quality planting material allows to obtain flowers with a floral stem length, spike length and diameter of the flower of good quality.
