Residual substrate from Pleurotus sp. production as a component of tomato and pepper seedbeds
Main Article Content
Abstract
In Cuba, in recent years, the production of edible mushrooms has been encouraged. To this end, it is necessary to propose alternatives that utilize the spent mushroom substrate (SS) generated during the production process, in order to provide a circular economy and sustainability approach to the mushroom cultivation cycle. The study aimed to evaluate the spent substrate from Pleurotus sp. production on guinea grass as a component of tomato and pepper seedling nursery substrates. Once the mushroom cycle was completed, the SMS was combined with Ferralitic Red soil and manure (bovine and rabbit, respectively), and subjected to a composting process for 32 days, with irrigation twice weekly. The resulting material was mixed with Ferralitic Red soil (50:50 v:v). The final substrate was characterized and used for the production of tomato and pepper seedlings. The final substrates showed differences in physical, physico-chemical, chemical, and microbiological parameters among the substrates and with respect to earthworm humus, used as a control. Beneficial microorganisms were detected, but no groups considered pathogenic were found. One hundred percent of tomato and pepper seeds sown in the SMS-containing substrates germinated, indicating that they are not phytotoxic. The seedlings exhibited differences in growth indicators, and although an early growth stage was evaluated, the plants obtained were suitable for transplanting. The results demonstrated the feasibility of using SMS from Pleurotus sp. production on guinea grass for the production of vegetable seedlings, providing the technology with a circular economy approach.
